Lord Wantage commissioned this statue of King Alfred by Count Gleichen which was erected in 1877

Welcome to the ancient town of Wantage, nestled in the Vale of White Horse, and the birthplace of King Alfred the Great in 849 AD when King Ethelwulf’s Court stayed at the royal palace in the town.  It is also the home of the Icknield Way Morris Men where the current Side began in the 1950’s, though the Morris tradition in the town is known to be older.
